The Army has nominated a high-ranking American general in Iraq to serve as commander of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Army Maj. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV has also been nominated for promotion to lieutenant general, officials said.

Caldwell is currently serving as deputy chief of staff for strategic effects, Multi-National Force-Iraq, and has been one of the U.S. military’s highest-profile spokesmen in the country.

The Air Force chief of staff has also announced several general officer assignments affecting commands in the Central Command area. Among those announced late Tuesday are:

Maj. Gen. William L. Holland, the deputy combined forces air component commander at CENTCOM and vice commander of the Ninth Air and Space Expeditionary Task Force at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, has been nominated to become vice commander, Ninth Air Force, Air Combat Command and deputy commander, Central Command Air Forces at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C.

Brig. Gen. Maurice H. Forsyth, the deputy director of global operations on the Joint Staff in Washington, D.C., has been nominated to become deputy combined forces air component commander, CENTCOM, and vice commander, Ninth Air and Space Expeditionary Task Force at Al Udeid.

Brig. Gen. Jonathan D. George, commander of the 55th Wing, Air Combat Command, Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., has been nominated to become deputy commander of the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, Political-Military affairs.
