Overseas contributions to the 2009 Combined Federal Campaign — including those in Europe — appear to be down from the previous year, but officials with the government-endorsed charity drive caution that the numbers are not final.

The major campaigns in Europe, run by the Army, Air Force and Navy for U.S. servicemembers and federal employees, ended in December. All three reported slightly lower totals than in 2008.

The Army’s European total dropped from almost $2.42 million to $2.39 million, while the Air Force declined to $1.97 million from $2.03 million and the Navy fell to $522,000 from $580,000. Service representatives said the numbers wouldn’t be official until audits are conducted in April.

Wendy Beach, communications director for Global Impact, the nonprofit organization that runs the campaigns overseas and in the Washington, D.C., area, said $15.8 million was raised overseas in 2008. The total to date for 2009 is $15.6 million.

"Pledges continue to come in, so we will not have the official figures until spring," she said Wednesday by telephone. The campaign in the nation’s capital concluded Friday. So far, that campaign, drawing from about 350,000 federal workers, has raised more than $59.5 million. It raised $62.7 million in 2008.

Beach said there are about 240 CFC campaigns across the States, with the two her organization manages being the largest.
