The last day of classes for students and teachers will be one day sooner than scheduled because Defense Department schools in Europe will close Friday in observance of the national day of mourning for former President Reagan.

Most schools were to close with a half day of instruction on Thursday. They will now wrap up the school year with a full day on Wednesday, according to Frank O’Gara, spokesman for Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Europe.

In addition, teachers who were scheduled for a “duty day” on Friday will instead complete that work on Thursday and be off on Friday.

Other school events will be rescheduled accordingly, and bus service will be canceled for Thursday, the school system announced.

School offices will reopen for business on June 14 for registration and withdrawals.

DODDS made the schedule announcement Tuesday after President Bush’s executive order to close federal offices on Friday.

Some commissaries to be closed Friday

The Defense Commissary Agency has designated some of its stores in Europe to remain open while others close for the national day of mourning declared by President Bush in the wake of former President Reagan’s death.

According to a DECA news release, stores that will remain open their normal hours Friday are: Ansbach, Bamberg, Schweinfurt, Patch, Kelley, Panzer, Vilseck, Grafenwöhr, Würzburg, Baumholder, Heidelberg, Ramstein, Vogelweh, Bitburg, Darmstadt, Hanau, Wiesbaden, and McCully, all in Germany; RAF Lakenheath and RAF Menwith Hill, in England; all stores in Italy, Spain, Egypt, Portugal and Turkey; Chièvres, Belgium; and Schinnen, Netherlands.

Any stores not listed will be closed for the day and reopen their next regular scheduled day, according to the release.
