KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — More than 40 students from military families living in Europe were among this year’s 670 recipients of college scholarships awarded through the Scholarships for Military Children Program, officials announced this month.

Each student, who must be the child of an active-duty, reserve/guard or retired U.S. military member and enrolled or planning to enroll full-time in a four-year undergraduate college or university, will receive $1,500.

The Defense Commissary Agency and Fisher House Foundation team up to offer the scholarships. Commissary business partners, including manufacturers, suppliers and vendors, donate funds for the scholarship to Fisher House, which administers the program. The Fisher House Foundation is a private-public partnership that supports the U.S. military, according to its website. Every dollar received is given as a scholarship grant, according to a Fisher House news release.

This year’s total scholarship award of $1,005,000 was the highest amount in the program’s 11 years, according to Fisher House. Applications this year numbered 4,868, with an independent scholarship committee considering academic achievement, participation in school and community activities, work experience and an essay. The goal of the program, according to DeCA officials, is to provide at least one scholarship at each DeCA commissary location worldwide.

Scholarship winners at commissaries in the Europe region, according to DeCA and Fisher House, are:
