The first installment of a two-part documentary highlighting 50 years of the American Forces Network and its operations south of the Alps will be repeated at 11 a.m. Saturday on AFN Prime Atlantic.

The special, titled “AFN South — The First 50 Years,” commemorates the golden anniversary of the Italy-based network from its early days as the Blue Danube Network to the high-tech satellite operation that it is today.

“Part I — Over the Air” first aired on Thursday, and will be shown again on April 21 and 23. “Part II — SATNET,” which covers the transition to satellite broadcasting, will be shown Thursday at 6 p.m., and repeated on Saturday at 11 a.m., as well as April 28 and 30.

Magnus to pin on fourth star

The chief of Marine Corps programs and resources has been given the nod to pin on a fourth star and assume the Corps’ No. 2 position under the Commandant, according to a Pentagon announcement.

Pending Senate confirmation, Lt. Gen. Robert Magnus will become the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps replacing Gen. William “Spider” Nyland. Nyland is expected to retire this summer.

Airman convicted of using, distributing Ecstasy

An airman from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, was convicted at a court-martial of using and distributing the illegal drug Ecstasy, the Air Force said Friday.

Airman 1st Class Jacob Hawkins of the 52nd Civil Engineer Squadron pleaded guilty to charges of wrongful use of Ecstasy, wrongful introduction onto a military installation and wrongful distribution at a Monday hearing.

He was sentenced to one year in jail, reduction to the lowest enlisted grade, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and given a bad-conduct discharge.
