The military’s Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center sent 20,000 language products, such as phrase cards, to U.S. troops in Haiti to help servicemembers communicate with victims of the deadly earthquake.

The products list "survival" phrases and medical terms to help troops interact with the Haitian people. The tools were sent to U.S. Southern Command and the XVIII Airborne Corps out of Fort Bragg, N.C., according to a center news release.

The center, based in Monterey, Calif., sent two types of language tools: a quick-reference phrase card and a more in-depth kit, which consists of a booklet of vital phrases and an audio CD for pronunciation.
