‘Dumbledore’ visits Cummings Elementary

A light rain and a frigid day didn’t stop a famous wizard from reading to students Thursday from atop Cummings Elementary School at Misawa Air Base.
Dressed as Professor Dumbledore from J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter fantasy series of books and films, Principal Scott Sterry read to his students from the school’s roof after promising that he would if they read a combined 6,000 books in two months.
Sterry read from books ranging from Mark Twain’s "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" to simpler selections for Cummings preschool students.
The school’s 226 students ended up reading 6,026 books, according to a school news release.
Six classrooms had each student participate in the program, which was part of the Read Across America program.
Five Cummings students read more than 100 books each.
