SPANGDAHLEM, Germany — Law enforcement officials are investigating allegations of illegal drug use among family members at Spangdahlem Air Base and the Bitburg annex in Germany.

Maj. Melinda Morgan, chief of public affairs for the 52nd Fighter Wing, was unable to give details about the ongoing investigation, which was started several weeks ago.

“We had someone make allegations against family members about drug use,” she said.

“We are investigating it.”

No criminal charges have been filed, but seven administrative actions have been taken so far against family members for use of controlled substances, such as marijuana.

A press release issued by the wing Wednesday noted that family members are not subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, “but are subject to host nation laws, [Department of Defense] instructions and installation directives and policies.”

The press release said jurisdiction matters are worked closely with host nation authorities. It also noted the Air Force’s zero tolerance drug use policy.

Because of privacy concerns, Morgan could not discuss whether the family members involved are children.

She said it is not known when the investigation will end.

“We need to let the investigation complete itself,” she said.
