CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Select base schools throughout the Pacific will keep their doors open this summer for a summer school program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade and online courses will be offered to high school students.

Department of Defense Dependents Schools Pacific/Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools Guam are offering the courses from June 27 to July 22, said Chip Steitz, DODDS Pacific/DDESS Guam spokesman. The four-week, half-day program is free but space is limited and the specific number of openings was not readily available.

The program will feature an “academic enrichment curriculum that emphasizes math and language arts,” Steitz said. “The summer program is not a remedial program. It is designed to support and reinforce student learning through fun and engaging activities.”

Only certain schools are hosting the program in each district, but all students from throughout that district may apply for the course, Steitz said. Parents will be responsible for dropping off and picking up students; no buses will run for the summer school. The elementary/middle school program is being offered on a first-come, first-served basis, Steitz said.

The online courses for high school students are being offered to those who need credits in science, math, English language and social studies.

“As the end of the school year approaches, the online course option will be offered to those students who require an additional credit or need to repeat a failed course to graduate,” Steitz said. Available online seats are limited, he said, to eight in Guam, 12 in South Korea, 34 in mainland Japan and 26 in Okinawa.

Due to the online program’s “rigorous demands,” Steitz said, high school students can enroll in only one course. Students and parents also will be required to sign a letter of understanding that states the student’s responsibility to complete the course.

Contact your local school’s office for more information on any of the summer school programs or for registration forms.
