HEIDELBERG, Germany — A man with intimate knowledge of the Arabian world will soon will take over the reins of 1st Armored Division, even as the division prepares to move from Kuwait into Iraq for occupation duties.

The Pentagon announced that Brig. Gen. Martin E. Dempsey — currently the chief of the Army’s “Saudi Arabian National Guard Modernization Program” in Riyadh — will replace Maj. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez as the commander of the Old Ironsides division.

Sanchez has been given the nod to pin on his third star and take command of Germany-based V Corps, which is now in Iraq. V Corps’ current commander is Lt. Gen. William Wallace. It is still uncertain where Wallace is going.

Meanwhile, other general officers are on the move. Among them:

• Maj. Gen. Anthony R. Jones, currently serving as the chief of staff, U.S. Army Europe, has been nominated for his third star and assignment as deputy commanding general and chief of staff, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Monroe, Va.• Maj. Gen. William E. Mortensen, commanding general, 21st Theater Support Command in Germany, to director for logistics, J-4, U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.• Brig. Gen. (Promotable) Bennie E. Williams, deputy commanding general, 21st Theater Support Command, to commanding general, 21st Theater Support Command.• Brig. Gen. Gary M. Jones, commander, Special Operations Command Europe, U.S. European Command, Germany, to commanding general, U.S. Army Special Forces Command (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.• Brig. Gen. Thomas R. Csrnko, chief, Office of Military Cooperation, Kuwait, American Embassy, Kuwait, to commander, Special Operations Command Europe, U.S. European Command.• Brig. Gen. Charles W. Fletcher, Jr., commanding general, 3rd Corps Support Command, U.S. Army Europe, to assistant deputy chief of staff, G-4, U.S. Army, Washington, D.C.
