SEOUL — A South Korean Air Force explosive-disposal team disarmed a Korean War-era bomb found at an apartment construction site Wednesday, officials said.

A work crew discovered the 500-pound bomb Wednesday afternoon in the Yongsan neighborhood of Seoul, near the Sobingo subway station. The station is within a five-minute walk of gate 52 at Yongsan Garrison’s South Post.

South Korean police evacuated neighborhood residents, then called in the special explosives disposal team. The team finished removing the bomb’s detonator around 8:45 p.m., officials said.

According to the South Korean Air Force, the bomb is an AN-M64A1, an American-designed weapon commonly used against ammunition dumps, railways cars, airplanes on the ground and buildings.

The bomb found Wednesday was missing its tail fin but otherwise intact. Similar ordnance has been found at construction sites and in fields throughout the country.
