PYEONGTAEK, South Korea — Troops living off-post in the Camp Carroll area might be without water in their homes Friday to early Sunday because of a water main replacement project.
But they’ll have all they can lug home from the post.
The Army will set up numerous water pick-up points inside Carroll and make showers and lockers available at the post gym during the outage, according to U.S. Army Garrison Daegu officials.
"We wanted to make certain that the families and the soldiers who live in the local community have access to clean drinking water and personal hygiene facilities," said Mark Faivre, with the garrison’s directorate of plans, training, mobilizations and security.
Carroll will have water because its supply comes from a well, Faivre said.
But for those off-post, taps are scheduled to go empty from 6 a.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Sunday while a water main is replaced in the nearby city of Gumi. Although some off-post housing may be equipped with reserve water tanks, others have no such back-up, Faivre said. That would mean no water for drinking, cooking or bathing.
Local fire departments could be affected too, Faivre said. Accordingly, off-post residents are advised to be extra-careful when cooking or doing anything else that could touch off an unintended fire, he said.
Once the water in their toilet has emptied after flushing, residents will have to pour water into the toilet bowl to ensure proper flushing and sanitation, he said.
"They’d be encouraged to fill containers or a bath tub or something before the tap goes off," said Faivre. "Then they can get their fresh drinking water from Camp Carroll if they need to."
Carroll will make available two water taps with unlimited access to all Defense Department ID card holders.
A tap at Building 628, the water treatment plant, will be accessible 24 hours a day. Another, at Building 915, the transportation motor pool wash rack area, will be accessible from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Users must provide their own water containers.
In addition, three water trucks will be available June 5 to 9 at the parking lots of the Apple Blossom Cottage, the post fitness center, and the military police station, Faivre said.
Showers and locker rooms will be available at the fitness center during its normal operating hours: 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
