AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy — An airman assigned to the 603rd Air Control Squadron pleaded guilty to marijuana use at a special court-martial last week.

Staff Sgt. Michael J. Federowski was sentenced to a reduction in rank to E-4, forfeiture of $100 monthly for a year and hard labor without jail for 90 days, according to a court document released by the 31st Fighter Wing public affairs office after the trial ended Wednesday.

String of bad checks lands airman in jailAVIANO AIR BASE, Italy – An airman assigned to the 724th Air Mobility Squadron pleaded guilty in a special court-martial to writing a string of bad checks in 2005 and 2006.

Airman 1st Class Christopher L. Page was sentenced to reduction in rank to E-1 and six months in jail, according to a release issued by the 31st Fighter Wing public affairs office.

According to a report released after the trial, which ended Thursday, he was responsible for writing more than 20 bad checks for more than $6,300 during a 13-month period.

Incirlik squadron best of its kind in Air ForceThe 39th Services Squadron at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, was selected for the Maj. Gen. Eugene L. Eubank award for best small services squadron last week, according to a news release.

It’s the latest in a string of awards given to support operations at Incirlik. The Sultan Inn dining facility won the U.S. Air Forces in Europe food excellence award this year and is among the finalists for the Air Force honor.

Aviano students excel in math competitionWIESBADEN, Germany — A four-member team from Aviano Middle School in Italy took first place last week in the Department of Defense Dependents Schools’ 2007 MATHCOUNTS competition.

The Aviano team, coached by teacher Alan Scharff, was made up of Sam Hillestad, Michelle Navarro, Emily Prior and James Yoder. A team from Zama Middle School from Japan finished second, ahead of a squad from Ramstein Middle School.

Ten teams and seven individuals participated in the event.

Yukino Nagai from Kadena Middle School, Japan, who was the individual first-place winner, Daniel Mikkelson from Schweinfurt Middle School, and Emily Dees from Ramstein Middle School will join Hillestad to represent DODDS as a team at a national competition May 10-13 at Fort Bliss, Texas. Scharff will be the coach.
