Navy Rear Adm. Jeffrey L. Fowler, deputy commander of the Naples, Italy-based U.S. Naval Forces Europe-6th Fleet, has been nominated to become the superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., the Pentagon announced.

Fowler, a 1978 academy graduate, would be promoted to vice admiral if his appointment is approved.

Fowler assumed his current position at the Naples command last July.

His exact title is: director of Naval Forces Europe/6th Fleet Plans and Operations; deputy 6th Fleet commander; commander of Submarines, Allied Naval Forces South; commander of Submarine Group Eight; commander of Task Force 69; commander of Task Force 164.
