NAPLES, Italy — Italian carabinieri are investigating the off-base robbery of a Navy-contracted armored van Tuesday afternoon.
About $100,000 worth of checks, credit card slips, euro, dollars and other monetary items were taken from the Investigatore Guard-Transport Inc. van, said Naples base public affairs officer Lt. Cmdr. Lisa Braun.
The van was on its way from Naval Support Activity Gaeta to the Naples Carney Park golf course when the robbery occurred, she said. There are conflicting reports as to where the van was actually robbed.
Carabinieri from the Pozzuoli office responded to the 1 p.m. robbery and are investigating.
The company’s vans make frequent runs for the Naples and Gaeta Navy Exchanges, commissary and Morale, Welfare and Recreation departments, according to Naples commander Capt. Dave Frederick in his weekly Panorama newspaper column.
Officials from Investigatore Guard-Transport Inc. did not respond to queries on Friday.
Braun said that some of the stolen items may have had credit card or Social Security numbers on them.
“We want people to be careful and monitor their bank and credit accounts to make sure there is no suspicious activity,” she said. Braun said people who suspect that their information has been used fraudulently should call their banks.
Since Tuesday’s robbery, Navy officials have identified whose checks were stolen. MWR has already contacted those check-writers and the Navy Exchange and commissary have contacted, or will be contacting, affected patrons.
Exchange and commissary officials would like anyone who wrote checks on certain specific days and locations to call them.
Those writing checks at the Gricignano commissary between June 9-13 should contact Arthur Lehman at DSN 625-3895, commercial 081-724-3895, or Robert Colella at DSN 625-3896, commercial 081-724-3895.
Those writing checks June 13-14 at either the Gricignano or Capodichino Navy Exchange mini-marts should contact Tia Millardo at DSN 625-4927, commercial 081-724-4927.
The Navy Federal Credit Union has agreed not to charge a stop-check fee for those with affected checks, said Braun.
Braun also recommended individuals who may have had their checks stolen, or personal information compromised, visit the Federal Trade Commission’s I.D. theft Web site at: www.consumer.gov/idtheft.
