Labor Day in the United States marks the traditional end of the summer season, perhaps a lament for kids returning to school and a bit of relief for parents. But for Americans in South Korea, Labor Day weekend signals something else.

The monsoon season has passed. The oppressive heat and humidity of August is waning. And the long, cold winter has yet to set in.

So with temperatures expected to be in the low 80s and no rain forecast, there’s plenty to do over the three-day weekend — lengthened by many commands to a four-day weekend because of an additional “training holiday.”

Among scheduled area events:

Area I

Saturday:

Camp Stanley’s Community Activities Center sponsors an Osan overnight shopping and nightlife trip. Buses will depart at 10 a.m. from the CAC. Call DSN 732-5995 for more information.

Camp Red Cloud’s Community Activities Center holds a bass fishing trip, leaving at 6 a.m. Call DSN 732-6246 for more information.

Camp Page’s fitness center sponsors basketball, racquetball and tennis tournaments, all beginning at 10 a.m. Also, remote-control model car racing will be held beginning at 1 p.m.

Sunday:

Camp Stanley’s Community Activities Center will host a Korean and American friendship eight- ball pool tournament beginning at 10 a.m. There also will be a barbecue on the CAC patio.

Camp Page begins a two-day soccer tournament at the fitness center at 10 a.m. A tour to a local jade mine will depart from the CAC at 3 p.m., and a paint-ball tournament will be held at 1 p.m.

Monday:

Camp Casey USO hosts a free barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Camp Red Cloud holds a Labor Day party with a cookout and sports tournaments, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Community Activities Center.

Area II

Saturday:

Yongsan Garrison will have its first-ever Labor Day Block Party, in the Main Post Club and Bowling Center parking area. The event will be from noon to midnight, with bands, inflatable games for kids and hot dog-eating and talent contests. A drawing will be held with a grand prize of a round-trip airline ticket to the United States. Call DSN 738-5254 for more information.

Also at Yongsan, softball, basketball and tennis tournaments will be held from Saturday through Monday at Collier Field House.

Sunday:

The Dragon Hill Lodge on Yongsan Garrison is planning a Hawaiian Luau from 7 to 11 p.m. in the DHL courtyard. Games, food and drinks will be available.

Monday:

The Area II 5K Fun Run starts in front of Collier Field House. Registration begins at 7 a.m.; the race begins at 8 a.m.

Area III

Saturday:

Camp Humphreys will host two runs, a 5K and a 10K, both to begin at 8 a.m. Registration will be at 7 a.m. at the post gym.

An “Oops-say-o Block Party” is to start at 11 a.m. in the Strike Zone parking area. The day is to feature a “Fear Factor,” contest, driving range, “no-hands” kimchi-eating and a “best barbecue wing” contest plus various games.

Several tournaments also are scheduled at the Community Activities Center, including eight- ball pool and foosball. Call DSN 753-8825 for information on times and other details.

Area IV

No information was available on Area IV Labor Day activities.

Osan Air Base

A “Barbecue and Blues” event is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Officers Club. Open to all base community members of all ranks, it’s to include a free concert by blues artist Coco Montoya and a free barbecue buffet.

Also planned are competitions for best ribs, best booth décor and best costumes for those serving ribs, and for best cake and pie.

Kunsan Air Base

Saturday:

The base bowling center offers Red Pin Bowling all day with give-aways.

A kickball tournament is scheduled at the football field from 9 a.m. to noon. Players must sign up an hour in advance. A coed team bench press competition at the base fitness center is set for 2 to 5 p.m.; participants must sign up one hour before the contest.

Sunday:

At the Falcon Community Center, a dominoes tournament will begin at 2 p.m. and a spades tournament at 5 p.m.

A six-mile, four-person coed relay run is on for 9 to 11 a.m., beginning in back of the fitness center. A 15-person dodgeball tournament is to begin at 2 p.m. at the fitness center and a bowling marathon is to start at noon at the bowling center.

Monday:

A tug of war is to begin at 9 a.m. at the base running track. Bowling for a dime a game will be offered at the bowling center.

Chinhae Naval Base

The base will hold an “End-of-Summer Celebration” on Sept. 12 instead of on the Labor Day Weekend. The base softball field will be in use for exercise Ulchi Focus Lens during the Labor Day Weekend.

The party is to begin at 3 p.m. at the pavilion near the base gym. Events are to include a water balloon toss and wheelbarrow race. Adults and kids may take part in apple bobbing and pie-eating contests.

A tug of war and three-point basketball shooting competition are planned for adults.

A picnic dinner is to start at 5:30 p.m., with a fireworks display set at nightfall.
