RAF MILDENHALL, England — An RAF Lakenheath-based airman was killed Tuesday when his motorcycle collided with a car in the nearby town of Newmarket.

Senior Airman Benjamin Gonzalez, 24, was riding his motorcycle at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when he collided with a Mazda 6, Suffolk Constabulary officials said Wednesday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, Suffolk police said.

Gonzalez was assigned to Lakenheath’s 48th Fighter Wing, Tech. Sgt. Jill Lavoie, base spokeswoman, said Wednesday.

No one else was injured in the collision, Suffolk police spokeswoman Lisa Crane said.

Gonzalez was an explosive-ordnance disposal technician who arrived at Lakenheath on May 8 and had just received his household goods the Tuesday before the accident, Lavoie said.

A memorial is planned for Monday, at 3 p.m., at the base chapel.

A British coroner will consult with U.S. Air Force officials regarding who will lead the investigation, Crane said.
