It’s snow-fun being a soldier in Alaska.

Soldiers with the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, took to the skies over Joint Base Elmdorf-Richardson, Alaska this week to prepare for upcoming operations in northern Alaska.

The soldiers, according to an Army release, parachuted from a C-130 Hercules onto a landing zone while loaded with arctic gear, the first time the Alaska-based unit has conducted an arctic, airborne operation since returning from Afghanistan last year.

The soldiers also used skis to move from the drop zone to a rally point, according to the release.

“We are testing out jumping with the skis and the capabilities to see if we can start implementing it in our training,” said Staff Sgt. Bruce Henderson, an infantryman with the team, in the release. “The skis would give us a lot more mobility on the battlefield.”

The 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) is the Pacific theater’s only airborne brigade combat team, according to an Army website.
