American Forces Network won seven Defense Department-level broadcast journalism awards, including No. 1 radio and television newscast.

The Thomas Jefferson Broadcast Journalism Awards are the Department of Defense level awards. Competitors must first win at the major command and branch of service levels to advance to the DOD competition.

Judging for the competition was April 20-21 at the Defense Information School, Fort Meade, Md.

AFN winning entries are as follows.

¶ Regional television newscast: “The AFN (Europe) Evening News.”

¶ Regional radio newscast: “AFN (Europe) Morning Newswatch.”

¶ Television information program: “First Days,” AFN Vicenza (Italy), Staff Sgt. Gina Gray.

¶ Radio entertainment program: “Hot FM Holiday Warm Up,” AFN Heidelberg (Germany).

¶ Radio spot production: “0505,” AFN Livorno (Italy), Pfc. Amy English.

¶ Radio information program: “A Sailor’s View,” AFN Sigonella (Sicily), JO2 Mike Miller.

¶ Command information campaign: “Click on SHAPE,” AFN SHAPE (Mons, Belgium).
