BAMBERG, Germany — The 793rd Military Police Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment cased its colors in a ceremony Tuesday, announcing its move from Bamberg to Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, planned for May 2010.

The unit recently returned to Bamberg following a 15-month tour in Iraq.

The move comes as part of U.S. Army Europe’s relocation plan, announced in May, that affects thousands of soldiers and their families.

A new $88 million military police complex awaits the unit, according to unit officials. The unit oversees the MP operations of three companies and one military police detachment at Fort Richardson and other posts in Alaska.

About 6 percent of the soldiers stationed in Bamberg will relocate to Alaska. The remainder of the unit will be filled with soldiers from elsewhere, according to the unit.
