After two years of hard work and impressive community projects, five Pacific-based girls have earned the Girl Scout’s highest honor, the Gold Award.

According to Girl Scouts USA, the award is based on a project “that fulfills a need within a girl’s community, creates change, and hopefully, is something that becomes ongoing.”

The local girls completed a community service project that required more than 50 hours to design and implement.

They started with career exploration projects, leadership activities, challenge activities and community service, according to USA Girl Scouts Overseas-West Pacific, the girls’ chapter. The chapter, based at Camp Zama, Japan, serves more than 2,000 girls at 14 Pacific military installations.

Gold Award recipients are eligible for scholarships from many colleges and universities including military academies, according to the chapter.

The award recipients are:

• Sarah Streeton and Rebecca Williams, Camp Zama, Japan.

Streeton and Williams, 2004 graduates of Zama American High School, completed a series of “Law Week” activities in May. Their final project included a poster contest for elementary school students; a voter registration and absentee ballot drive; and a mock trial held at Zama American High School.

• Rebecca Wellons, Yongsan Garrison, Seoul.

Wellons worked on a renovation project at Seoul American High School’s auditorium. She analyzed the needs of the theater department and conducted a community drive to buy new costumes and props. She also arranged repairs to the facility and led a community clean up of the dressing rooms and backstage areas.

• Elizabeth Hille and Alexthea Carter, Osan Air Base, South Korea.

Hille and Carter undertook a project to inventory the Osan Chapel Library and track checked-out books and videos. They designed a computer inventory and cross-reference system, attached book pockets and cards to each book and video and created a card catalog. As a result, library materials are more readily available to the entire community at Osan Air Base.
