GIEBELSTADT, Germany — The 12th Aviation Brigade will hold a departure ceremony for its Afghanistan-bound units at 11 a.m. Thursday at its airfield in Giebelstadt, said Capt. James Barber, the brigade’s personnel officer.
The brigade headquarters is scheduled to deploy next month along with some of its subordinate units:
Company F of the 159th Aviation Regiment, a CH-47 Chinook transport company known as “Big Windy”;3rd Battalion, 158th Aviation Regiment, a UH-60 Black Hawk battalion;7th Battalion, 159th Aviation Regiment, an aviation maintenance battalion.All served in Iraq during the first rotation of troops in 2003-’04.
The ceremony will be held in the “Big Windy” hangar. It originally was to be held Tuesday, along with a ceremony transferring authority of two other 12th Aviation units to the 1st Armored Division’s 4th Brigade, based in Hanau, Germany.
The transfer ceremony will be some time in March, Barber said.
