Here’s an event that gives new meaning to the phrase “eat and run” — a Gourmet Marathon set to take place Sunday in Saarbrücken, Germany.

Choose between a marathon, a half-marathon or a relay race involving four-person teams. The course runs along the city’s streets, and the length of the route is 10.55 kilometers, or one-quarter the length of a marathon. This means that if you sign up for the big one, you’ll be covering the same circuit four times.

The gourmet portion of the race comes into play following your run, when participants will have the chance to enjoy treats such as a mini-Flammkuchen and an apple-and-ginger drink. During the race, rest stations will offer runners muesli bars, bananas and isotonic beverages.

This is a race where it’s nice to be the accompanying party. Hangers-on can delight in the gourmet market set up on both Sept. 15 and 16 in front of the State Theater. A stage offering live entertainment will add to the party atmosphere.

Register before May 31 and the cost is 35 euros for the full marathon; 20 euros for the half. There’s an additional 3-euro fee for rental of the timing chip. Participation for a four-person team costs 72 euros. It’s possible to sign up after May 31, but fees increase as the race nears.
