Snow Jazz GasteinSaegewerk and other venues in and around Bad Gastein, Austria Dates: March 9-18 Strong soul voices, a Brazilian trio, a saxophonist and groups with that Big Band sound are among the performers on the bill of the 17th edition of this music festival. In addition to evening performances, jazz acts also play on the terraces of ski lodges from noon-4 p.m. March 9, 10, 11, 15, 16 and 18. Many performances take place in an old saw mill that’s been converted into a concert venue. Admission: A 10-day festival pass goes for 140 euros. Head of the River RaceLondon, England Date: March 10-11 Hundreds of national and international crews of eight rowers take to the waters of the Thames to compete in this historic event. The 4.25 mile race begins at Mortlake and ends at Putney. Crews set off one after the other at 10-second intervals; the winner is the crew which completes the race in the fastest time. Last year’s race was cancelled due to unfavorable winds. London Beer WeekVarious venues, London, England Dates: March 12-18 Bars and breweries across the city have a special offer for lovers of ales, ciders, lagers and other types of beer. Festival pass holders can sample flights of three unique beers or boilermakers (beer and a shot of whiskey) from more than 75 taprooms at a cost of 5 pounds. St. Patrick’s Day celebrationsMunich, Germany Date: March 11 (festivities begin at noon) Can’t make it to Dublin? Munich celebrates St. Paddy’s day in style too, with a merry parade made up of some 50 groups, from sports clubs to folklore groups to Middle Ages fans. The parade sets off from Muenchner Freiheit, runs along Leopoldstrasse and Ludwigstrasse, and ends at Wittelsbacher Platz, the site of a green-themed party with live bands playing Irish music and dancing groups. Dolomiti Ski JazzCavalesi and other towns of the Val de Fiemme, Italy Dates: March 10-17 In early spring, this resort area in the Dolomites mountain range tempts winter sports enthusiasts with an additional offering. Two jazz concerts take place daily; one on the slopes and the later an evening performance at a local theater or pub.
