©Stars and StripesTokyo, September, 1957: Wearing a lei that was presented to her in Hawaii, singer Marian Anderson arrives in Tokyo to begin a three-month, State Department-sponsored tour of the Far East that was to include concerts in Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Vietnam, Burma, Pakistan and India. In 1939, Anderson earned a place in the history of the civil rights movement when, after being denied permission to perform at the Daughters of the American Revolution's Constitution Hall in Washington, she sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
