©Stars and StripesBerlin, May 1, 1948: As 200,000 residents of Berlin's Soviet sector gathered a half-mile away at the Lustgarden to celebrate the traditional May Day workers' holiday, this crowd of 120,000 listened to the Western point of view outside the war-torn Reichstag building. Noting that the Communists offered free beer and sausage to their participants (no small favor in postwar Germany), a speaker at the rival gathering said that "here we offer freedom."
