John Wright ©Stars and StripesFrankfurt, West Germany, October, 1963: Sgt. 1st Class Dawson Riddle of B Co., 14th Quartermaster Battalion, puts the finishing touches on a tank-shaped cake — weighing over 200 pounds — baked to welcome the first Operation Big Lift arrivals to Rhein-Main Air Base. In Big Lift, described as "a historic demonstration of the United States' power to throw a quick fighting punch overseas," more than 200 air transports were bringing 16,000 2nd Armored Div. soldiers and supporting units to Germany for war games.
