The commanding officer of Training Support Center San Diego was relieved of command Friday after violating the Navy's policy on hazing, the Navy said.

An investigation found Capt. Antonio Cardoso had forced personnel appearing for nonjudicial punishment to wear seabags on their backs for extended periods of time, according to a Navy news release.

A full seabag weighs about 45 pounds, according to the Navy Mobilization Processing Sites.

Cardoso, who took command of the center in February 2011, has been temporarily assigned to administrative duties at Navy Region Southwest headquarters and has been replaced by Cmdr. Jon Grant, the news release said.A House Armed Services subcommittee told military leaders during a March hearing that they must do more to end the culture of hazing.Cardoso is the 17th Navy commander to be fired this year.
