(Tribune News Service) — A South Jersey man preyed on a 16-year-old girl using his role as a recruiter for the New Jersey Army National Guard, authorities said Tuesday.

Police arrested Shawn C. Nguyen on Monday, charging him with two counts of sexual assault, criminal sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child.

Nguyen was a recruiter for the New Jersey Army National Guard at the time he sexually assaulted the teenager, police said.

A spokesperson for the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs was reached by NJ Advance Media for comment, but a statement was not immediately provided.

Attorney information for Nguyen, 44, of Egg Harbor Township, was not immediately available.

Police initiated the case following a report of a woman in distress at a Mays Landing Wawa on the Black Horse Pike in June 2022. Police did not release further information on specifics of the report.
