West Germany, May, 1960: A seagoing wagon train heads through shallow water to the island of Neuwerk, about six miles out to sea in northwestern Germany. When the tide was low enough for the markers showing the route to be visible, trains of up to 37 wagons would carry tourists on the hour-long trek to the small island, population 70.
Stars and Stripes' 1960 story about the wagon trains.
