Lambarene, Gabon, July, 1960: Dr. Albert Schweitzer — 85-year-old author, physician, anthropologist, zoologist, winner of the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize — works in his office at the village hospital he founded in the equatorial African jungle. The hospital, with beds for 980 patients, also served the nearly 200 lepers living in the village.
