Flying with Starlight, 1992

Amfreville, Normandy, France, June 5, 1994: Parachutes glide towards earth as some 550 paratroopers reenacted the 101st Airborne Division D-Day jump. Nineteen of them are veterans of the actual landing 50 years ago who had fought to liberate the small town of Ste. Mère-Église. They were the first to jump, together with 22 other WWII combat paratroop veterans.
They preceded about 500 active-duty American and French paratroops. The American paratroops were from the 101st and 82nd Airborne division, and the 3rd Battalion, 325th Airborne Battalion Combat Team in Vicenza, Italy. All landed in a 300-acre drop zone in Amfreville, about 3 miles from Ste.Mère-Église.

La Fiere, France, Apr. 23, 2014: The statue of "Iron Mike" standing in a field at La Fiere, near Sainte-Mère-Église represents the paratroops of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions who fought in the area. The monument is located next to the Bridge in La Fiere where on the 6th-9th of June members of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment and 325th Glider Regiment fought against repeated German attacks to hold the bridge.

The base of the statue contains the inscription

“A grateful tribute
to American Airborne soldiers
of D-Day
6 June 1944 to 7 June 1997”

The monument is a replica of the original "Iron Mike" statue at Fort Bragg, North Carolina by sculptor and military spouse Leah Hiebert in 1960 - 1961 and modelled on Sgt. Major James Runyon

Blace, Macedonia, Apr. 1, 1999: Thousands of refugees - forced onto trains in Pristinia, provincial capital of Kosovo - have been dropped off at the Macedonian border in recent days. The Macedonian government estimates that at least 40,000 refugees have entered the country since airstrikes began over Yugoslavia.

Stars and Stripes reporters and photographers filed news stories from both Macedonia as well as Albania as NATO intensified its air campaign in late March through April 1999 and the flood of refugees out of Kosovo, looking for safety and security in Macedonia. Following the journalistic priciple not to be part of the story, they filed stories about the lives of refugees and airmen, soldiers and sailors. But covering a war begets plenty of stories.
