VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The driver who died last weekend after a car crash in Spotsylvania County, Va. was a Virginia Beach father and Navy man who had emigrated from Bangladesh .

Mohammad Khalil, 36, moved to the United States with his family several years ago, said Imtiaz Zaman, a close friend.

Khalil was working as an accountant in Bangladesh before he dropped everything for a fresh start. He was proud to serve his new country in the Navy and had dreams of becoming an officer, Zaman said.

“He was one of the lucky people who won a visa through the lottery system,” Zaman said. “He was a gentleman who had high aspirations and who came to the United States with a lot of hope. Unfortunately, his end came too soon.”

Khalil leaves behind his wife, Mahfuja Sathee, 28; and their two sons, 8 and 4, Zaman said.

Sathee is being treated at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center and is expected to recover, Zaman said. The children have been released and are being cared for by friends of the family.

The state police said the family was driving in the rain on Interstate 95 north last Saturday when Khalil lost control of his Toyota Corolla. They were headed to Washington. The vehicle went off the highway, hit a guardrail and returned to the road. It struck another car and was then hit by a tractor-trailer. Khalil died at Mary Washington Hospital that afternoon. The two other drivers were not injured.

The Navy said Khalil enlisted in July 2011. He trained in Illinois until August 2016, when he was stationed in Norfolk to serve as a logistics specialist 2nd class.

Khalil became a U.S. citizen and bought a home for his family near Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach. The family’s oldest son is in elementary school.

Zaman said Khalil had a green thumb and spent a lot of time in his backyard tending to his robust vegetable garden.

He said he hopes the family can recover from the tragic accident and continue living in the United States.

Imam Rachid Khould, the leader of the Crescent Community Center in Virginia Beach, said the family attends the mosque.

The viewing and funeral prayer for Khalil will be held at noon today at the Islamic Center of Tidewater, 1442 W 49th St. in Norfolk.
