WASHINGTON — The American Legion is promoting an unusual lottery at this weekend’s Grand Prix Freedom 250 in the nation’s capital to raise money for its charities and programs that support veterans and their families.
A restored “street legal” military Humvee will be on display during racing events Saturday and Sunday near the National Mall. Tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the first IndyCar race on the streets of downtown D.C.
The Humvee will be given away to one individual in a drawing after the lottery ends on Dec. 19, the American Legion said.
“The Humvee is an iconic symbol of American military service, and now this one has a new mission. It’s helping the American Legion tell the story of veterans who continue strengthening our workforce, economy, and communities long after their military service ends,” the American Legion said in a written statement.
The vehicle was donated by Jim White, founder of Street Legal Exports, based in Florida, which restores and delivers military vehicles to customers in the U.S. and around the world.
The American Legion is making it easy for people to enter for a chance to win.

Although the “Drive 4 Freedom sweepstakes” is free to enter, the American Legion is encouraging people to donate to the organization’s charities and programs to help veterans.
Publicity about the Humvee giveaway is also raising awareness about The American Legion, as it works to bring in more post-9/11 veterans as members, the organization said.
The American Legion provides financial aid, advocacy, and rehabilitation services to former service members, military families and local communities.
The organization also does a lot of one-on-one work helping veterans at no cost to apply for VA disability compensation, as well as represent veterans’ interests before Congress.
“We encourage veterans and military service members to join the American Legion because membership gives them a voice. We advocate every day for the rights, benefits and quality of life of those who have served,” the American Legion said.
