ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (Tribune News Service) — The Quilts of Valor Foundation this month donated two quilts to Richmond County veterans in honor of one’s past service and another in honor of his current service.
Calvin Gibson, 91, who served in the 24th Infantry Division in the Korean War from 1952 to 1953, and his grandson William Lunceford, who is preparing to ship off to Afghanistan — both members of American Legion Post 147 — were given individually made quilts. Gibson was sick at the time of the ceremony, so the Foundation members went to his home to present him with the quilts — and Lunceford’s was a surprise.
“(Gibson) was tickled to death with it,” said Richard Lunceford, former commander of Post 147. “He really appreciated them coming to his house.”
Carlton Hawkins of Post 147 said that because William Lunceford was on the verge of a tour of duty, the Post decided to surprise him with one with his grandfather.
Hawkins said these two quilts are the first awarded to members of Post 147. Most Quilts of Valor have been awarded to Vietnam veterans in recent years, according to OutreachNC.
“These quilts are one of a kind,” Hawkins said. “They’re given to people with a military background in appreciation for services rendered.”
The Foundation began less than 20 years ago when Catherine Roberts of Delaware formed it while her son, Nat, was in the Army. While he was deployed in Iraq, Catherine dreamt that a young soldier was struggling with the “demons of war” when suddenly a quilt appeared and wrapped the soldier up, providing comfort, according to Meagan Burgad writing for OutreachNC.com.
Since then, she decided to make quilts for soldiers all over.
To receive a Quilt of Valor, a veteran or current service member must be nominated. The only qualifications are that the recipient must have served in the military during a time of conflict and have not previously received a quilt.
In order to nominate someone, you can go to the Quilts of Valor Foundation website, www.qovf.com.
