If you missed the spectacular volksmarch in Heidelberg, Germany, a few weeks ago, you have another chance Sunday. This particular Heidelberg march gives folks the chance to walk 5-, 10- or 15-kilometer routes starting from the Emmertsgrund area. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. at the Bürgerhaus in Emmertsgrund, but you can’t park there. You need to park at the Heidelberger Leben AG building parking lot at Forum 1. Shuttle bus service will be provided to and from the start hall. There will not be a beautiful glass mug as the prize this time; only IVV credit. • There is a walk Sunday that is very convenient for folks in the Wiesbaden area. The start is at the Sophie and Hans Scholl School at Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse 10 in the Klarenthal neighborhood. Doors open at 8 a.m. for the 6-, 10- and 20-kilometer trails. • If you are looking for a teddy bear to add to your collection, head to Pfaffenweiler this weekend for its volksmarch. Saturday is an afternoon walk with a noon start time. On Sunday, the start hall opens at 7 a.m. The 5-, 10- and 20-kilometer trails start at the Festhalle on Efeustrasse. • Good luck to the Ramstein Roadrunners Saturday as they load up a bus and head to the walk in Allenbach. After they work up a thirst at the volksmarch, they are going to the wine festival at Piesport. Allenbach, which hosts events Saturday and Sunday, is very convenient to the Baumholder and Kaiserslautern Military Communities, and close to the Eifel Community, too. The start hall is at the Gemeindehaus on Hauptstrasse in Allenbach. Doors open at 8 a.m. both days. The prize is a B-medal from the animal series. • Saturday in Belgium there is an opportunity to walk two events in one day. Welkenraedt is offering a two-day event, while Battice, just a few kilometers away, is hosting a Saturday afternoon walk. We have done both of these walks but not on the same day. The Battice walk starts in town but usually takes you south, down a long steep hill and under the Autobahn. After the turn-around at the control point, you get to walk back up that steep hill you came down. Here’s hoping for a new route this year! • For an unforgettable Halloween experience, join the Stuttgart German-American Wandering Club on a Haunted Halloween Bus trip Sunday, Oct. 28. The day starts with a 7-kilometer walk in Mossautal, followed by a “Brewer’s Buffet” lunch at the Schmucker Brauerei. After lunch, the bus will go to Burg Frankenstein in Muhltal. You will have the rest of the afternoon to tour the castle before a 6 p.m. departure to return to Patch Barracks. Halloween costumes are strongly encouraged. The cost is 45 euros for club members and 50 euros for non-members. Reserve your seat as soon as possible by sending an email to both dalcita@hotmail.com (Dal Pettaway) and heisser@alice.de (William Heisser). • Right after Halloween comes Christmas market season. We love the combination of a volksmarch followed by shopping at a Christmas market. So, if you know of a walking event near a market, please drop us a line at two.walkers@yahoo.com so we can spread the word.• After action report: Last weekend we did the walk in Gellik-Lanaken, Belgium, after visiting the Saturday morning flea market in Maastricht. We got to the flea market a little after 8 a.m. and the city workers were setting up the aluminum-framed stalls for the sellers. However, there were some parked cars in their way, and the police were ticketing them before having them towed! Bob was fascinated by the tow-truck that was going to use a crane to lift an offending car onto the back of the truck. The driver arrived in time to stop the lift — not in time to avoid the fine, but in time to spoil the entertainment. At the flea market, Bob found a ceramic plate made in Maastricht that commemorates the liberation of the city in September 1944. That makes a total of four Dutch liberation plates in his collection of WWII memorabilia. Look for Bob at the Ciney, Belgium, military flea market Oct. 28. This has got to be the biggest military flea market in Europe, with hundreds of vendors and thousands of shoppers. Email volksmarch information to two.walkers@yahoo.com. Mail brochures to Bob and Lorraine Huffaker, CMR 460, Box 278, APO AE 09752.
