One of our favorite walks takes place this weekend. The Schnelle Füße Koblenz e.V. offers five walking trails this Saturday and Sunday, and then they throw in a bike route event as well. Starting in the Sporthalle of the local town of Karthause, marchers can begin the 5, 10, and 20 kilometer trails each day between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m.; the start window is the same for bikers to hit the 25 kilometer course. The prize for completion of these courses is a model semi beer truck. By the way, Nordic walkers are definitely welcome in Karthause. The club also sponsors 42 and 50 kilometer trails each day. The 42K starts between 7 and 9 a.m.; the 50K starts between 7 and 8 a.m. The souvenir patch for completing either of these routes depicts a view of the Deutches Eck.

After you’ve finished your volksmarch, don’t miss visiting the Ehrenbreitstein, Europe’s largest fortress. Set 118 meters above Koblenz, it offers a commanding (and memorable) view of the old town as well as the Deutsches Eck (the German Corner), a memorial to German unity, where the Rhein and Mosel rivers converge.

Another one of our favorite walks is in Gulpen, Netherlands, this Sunday. The walking club "De Veldlopers" from Gulpen are hosting their 46th "Kastelenwandeltocht." You can start the 5 and 10 kilometer routes between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., the 15 and 20 kilometer routes between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the 35 kilometer route between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. You can expect plenty of hills in this area of the Netherlands, in fact it is one of our standing jokes that "Gulpen" is the Dutch word for hills. The start hall is at the Café Paddock on Dorpstraat. This is a busy street in the middle of town, so the earlier you get there; the easier it will be to find a parking place that is close to the start.

This Saturday’s walk in Bellevaux, Belgium, should be another nice walk. Bellevaux is in the Ardennes near Malmedy, Belgium, and is a short drive for those of you in the Eifel region of Germany, or in the Tri-border area. After the walk, be sure to visit the Baugnez 44 Historical Center. For more information about this new museum, go to www.baugnez44.be

Folks in the Kaiserslautern, Landstuhl, and Baumholder Military Communities can enjoy the Kindsbach, Germany, event this weekend beginning in the Mehrzweckhalle by the Bahnhof. The 5K, 10K and 20K begin on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Finish on Saturday by 5 p.m. and Sunday by 4 p.m.

They are offering B-medals this year; last year they gave a ceramic water pitcher. With any luck they still might have some.

Miscellaneous short notes about this week’s volksmarch events:

*Sorry, but no stuffed dogs that look like a Rottweiler this year at Rottweil, Germany. They are offering angel figurines this time.

Notes from Clark Soeldner, our Italian walking expert: This will be a busy weekend of walking at Terno d’Isola. They will be offering three walks over the two days with a special T-shirt for those who finish all three walks.

• The walk in Magnano in Riviera has a theme of chestnuts and everyone with a start card will receive a small bag of roasted chestnuts at the end.

• At Sandrigo, the 6 and 11 kilometer routes will be through the fields. The 22 km trail will be in the hills.
