Swiss ice climbing
January 2, 2013
Fearless types who enjoy making their way up vertical frozen streams will be in their element in Kandersteg, Switzerland, this weekend. Friday through Sunday, the Ice Climbing Festival will offer competitions, gear tests, demonstrations, workshops, shows and parties for fans of this sport at all levels of ability. Some of the world’s top ice climbers will attend. Climbing contests take place Saturday from 10 a.m., with the final competition at 9:30 p.m. under floodlights. A party follows at the Taverne Pub Gemmi Lodge. Film and slide shows will be presented by the climbers themselves at the town’s Community Hall on Friday and Saturday evenings. Workshops are offered on Sunday at a cost of 40 CHF (about $44); participants must register in advance on the event website. The local tourism office offers special lodging prices for climbers and attendees; for details see http://tinyurl.com/d7jzrd2.
