The Tollwood Summer Festival opens Friday in Olympiapark in Munich, Germany, and runs through July 24.
Tollwood offers many top name acts, with 2012’s line-up including Lou Reed, Billy Idol, Katie Melua, Lady Antebellum and other well-known names.
But it’s more than just a music fest. It also serves as a forum for social and environmental issues. Tollwood’s “Market of Ideas” is made up of more than 200 stalls offering fair-trade crafts and organic foods.
A theatrical production, “As the World Tipped” (July 5-10), depicts the impact of an environmental catastrophe. The exhibition “Vorratskammer,” or “Pantry,” illustrates the phenomenon of food waste against the backdrop of a hungry world.
Entry to the festival grounds is free, although tickets are required for the headline acts.
