Call it the perfect mix of surf and turf.

One minute, you hear the sizzle of bacon from the pan on your Coleman camp stove. The next minute, it’s the sound of waves crashing against the shores.

The Baia Domizia campsite, just north of Mondragone in Campania, offers campers the best of two worlds: the outdoor experience of camping coupled with the ocean. Italy offers a wide variety of campsites along the shoreline, capitalizing on two of the passions of Italians, and Europeans, for that matter.

Several are listed on the Eurocamp Web site at: www.eurocamp.co.uk. A simple Google search turns up many more.

Baia Domizia, for example, is less than an hour’s drive north of Naples, provided travelers don’t hit peak beach traffic. While a little pricey — 88 euros for a two-night stay for two people — the grounds’ facilities made it worth the extra cash.

For example, the bathrooms and showers, of which many are located within a few minutes’ walk from any campsite, are kept quite clean. There are wash bays for both dishes and laundry, and the site offers on-site entertainment and amenities, from a disco and three swimming pools, to self-service restaurant, ice cream parlor, supermarket and shops.

The staff also offers various excursions during the week, including organized trips to Vesuvius, Ischia and Rome, mostly suited for the out-of-town travelers.

The site is a huge draw for international travelers, so English is spoken by some of the staffers.

Generally, Italy’s campsites offer plots for tents or campers, but also have huts, trailers or bungalows available for rent. Fares differ depending on the season — and some require a minimum of a one week’s stay during high season, usually in August.

There are a number of campsite options that cater to different interests. For example, south of Naples on Marina del Cantone between Capri and Positano on the Amalfi Coast, is the Villagio Camping Nettuno. Though not as nice, or organized, it offers campers with a passion for snorkeling a great opportunity to explore the rocky cliffs that jut from the ocean bottom.
