Bamberg’s Frühjahrsplärrer kicks off at the Plärrerplatz an der Breitenau; Nuremberg’s Frühlingsfest gets underway at the Volksfestplatz on the Dutzendteich; Bayreuth’s 49th annual Frühlingsfest begins on the city’s Volksfestplatz. • Namur, Belgium, offers a day full of folklore and traditions Saturday. Traditional musical groups, stalls offering the region’s culinary specialties, and an artisan’s market will fill the place d’Armes from 10 a.m. Folklore workshops will acquaint visitors with the traditions of this part of Belgium. In the Piazza del Duomo, the Scoppio del Carro, or Explosion of the Cart, takes place when a rocket in the shape of a dove descends along a wire strung from the cathedral and sets alight a cart packed with fireworks and explosives. • London is the venue for The Xchanging Boat Race, an annual event on the River Thames in West London between crews from Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The 2012 race will be the 158th such contest; Cambridge currently holds the lead with 80 victories to Oxford’s 76. London Mayor Boris Johnson will present the trophy to the winning crew.
