In the Piazza del Duomo, the Scoppio del Carro, or Explosion of the Cart, takes place when a rocket in the shape of a dove descends along a wire strung from the cathedral and sets alight a cart packed with fireworks and explosives. • London is the venue for The Xchanging Boat Race, an annual event on the River Thames in West London between crews from Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The 2012 race will be the 158th such contest; Cambridge currently holds the lead with 80 victories to Oxford’s 76. London Mayor Boris Johnson will present the trophy to the winning crew.
