The Kasteel de Haar, the Netherlands’ largest castle, serves as the backdrop to Elfia, an elf fantasy fair set for Saturday and Sunday. Kasteel de Haar is located just west of the city of Utrecht. The fair is billed as Europe’s biggest fantasy event.

Costumes make up an integral part of the festivities, and prizes are awarded for the most fantastical get-ups. Those wishing to compete on the main stage must register in advance.

Fantasy vehicles are shown off twice daily during the Elfia on Wheels parades. The program is packed with quirks, such as competitions including a Larp Battle, live music performed by an orchestra dressed as Hobbits, body painting, a troll wedding ceremony and numerous walking acts clad in garb from sci-fi to the Middle Ages.

The fair is open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Adult entry at the door costs 25 euros on Saturday and 22.50 euros on Sunday; entry for ages 3-11 is 13.50 euros, and ages 2 and under get in free.
