Saturday, a European travel adventure could be as close as your own couch.

Viewers throughout the continent will tune in Saturday night to the 58th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, a competition in which solo acts or groups represent their countries, sometimes offering campy or bewildering displays of musical talent.

Popular vote selects the winner, but participants can only vote for an artist from a nation other than their own. Results are broadcast immediately following the show, which might provide for interesting lessons in geopolitics as citizenspeople tend to vote for performers from nations with whom their own country has ties or favorable dispositions.

The country with the winning act has the honor of hostingwill host next year’s competition. The 2012 victor, Loreen, hails from Sweden, and so the city of Malmö will host this year’s Eurovision. The broadcast begins at 9 p.m. Learn more at www.eurovision.tv.
