The spectacle of brightly colored hot-air balloons floating gracefully against a wintry Alpine backdrop unfolds in Filzmoos, in the Salzburger province of Austria, when the 34th International BP-Gas Balloon Trophy attracts roughly 40 ballooning teams from around the world. The event runs from Jan. 12-19. Sunday is the “Night of the Balloons,” when the flickers of illuminated balloons floating high above the village will be choreographed to music. On the ground, visitors can keep warm with mulled wine, Jaeger tea and snacks. The evening ends with a display of fireworks. All events are subject to weather conditions. Visitors can book a balloon ride at apfelwirt.at (German only). Packages including a two-night stay and a balloon ascent are available. Trips can be booked throughout the winter.
