This was hardly a quesadilla.
It was more like a salad with assorted greens and raw onions wrapped up in a slightly crunchy tortilla. There was a thin spread of guacamole on the inside and an even thinner layer of barely detectable melted cheese. It was decidedly unquesadilla-like, but at least it was healthy.
After eating this high-fiber mound, I couldn’t help but think I was doing my colon a favor. But as I watched the waitress bring out one greasy-looking burger after another, with thick hunks of melted cheddar hanging off the edges, I realized I had erred.
At Schraeglage Meals and More, an eatery along Wilhelmsplatz in downtown Stuttgart, everyone, it seems, comes for the burgers. They’ve got standard off-the-menu burgers, but you can also build your own by filling out a special menu card with various toppings to select from. You can pick your style of bun and cheese. If you want to go heavy, you can top it with bacon, onion rings or even scrambled eggs.
Schraeglage is more of a small bar with food than a regular restaurant. In the later evening, it caters to a drinking crowd. During lunch and dinner hours, it offers straightforward American-style fusion food. The burgers are the mainstay, but there are other offerings that vary from week to week. I’ve heard they offer fish tacos on occasion, which unfortunately wasn’t an option on my recent visit.
Schraeglage has plenty of competition along Wilhelmsplatz, a short street with several affordable but excellent eateries next to one another, each with outdoor street-side seating.
It is sandwiched between Il Pomodoro, arguably the best pizza place in town, and Noodle One, a cozy Vietnamese spot. Three doors down is Murrhardter Hof Burhan, which specializes in Swabian dishes and is well regarded for its Maultaschen. And across the street is Ciba Mato, a popular cocktail bar.
Based on the tortilla, it’s hard to understand how Schraeglage can measure up. But given the place’s popularity, the fault may have been mine. Next time, I’ll order a burger.
