SASEBO NAVAL BASE, Japan — The dock-landing ship USS Tortuga, currently based in Little Creek, Va., will be forward-deployed to Sasebo Naval Base to replace the dock-landing ship USS Fort McHenry, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Japan, announced Friday.

The Tortuga is expected to arrive in Sasebo in March for turnover and assignment as part of the U.S. Navy’s Forward Deployed Naval Forces, according to a CNFJ spokesman. The Fort McHenry will depart Sasebo in April and return to Little Creek, where it will be permanently based.

The ship rotations are part of the Navy’s long-range plan to routinely replace older ships assigned overseas with newer or more capable ships, the spokesman added.
