USS Cowpens sailor dies after fall from ship
YOKOSUKA NAVAL BASE, Japan — A USS Cowpens sailor who fell roughly 100 feet off the ship and into a dry dock Thursday morning at Yokosuka Naval Base died from his injuries, 7th Fleet officials said.
The death is being investigated as a possible suicide, 7th Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Jeff Davis said on Thursday.
The sailor was standing on the bridge wing, which is several decks above the main deck, when he fell at about 8:05 a.m., Davis said.
The ship’s medical response team attended to the sailor soon after the fall, he said.
Base emergency responders transported the sailor to nearby U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka, where he was pronounced dead just before 9 a.m., Davis said.
The sailor’s name was being withheld pending family notification, according to Davis, who said further details were unavailable pending the investigation.
USS Cowpens, a guided-missle cruiser, has been undergoing maintenance since Feb. 24 and is scheduled to complete that cycle next month, Davis said.
