YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — The commander of U.S. Forces Korea recently released a holiday message to the troops.

“Each and every one of you — soldier, sailor, airman, Marine, civilian, contractor — contribute to the goal of peace, stability and freedom — for the citizens of the Republic of Korea and the people of Northeast Asia,” wrote U.S. Army Gen. Leon LaPorte. “The personal sacrifices you make by serving overseas (are) not taken for granted, and the American people are keeping you in their thoughts and prayers this holiday season.”

LaPorte wrote that being away from home isn’t easy during the holiday, especially for those serving overseas for the first time.

“If you have the opportunity, spend some time with those who are lonely or isolated from loved ones,” he wrote. “Remind them that their service is valued and they follow generations of Americans who have served to secure the freedom of millions. It is noble and meaningful service.”
