A staff sergeant from Aviano Air Base, Italy, is the top airman in Europe.

Staff Sgt. Dominick Griego of Aviano’s 31st Fighter Wing was named Airman of the Year and was honored with other top U.S. Air Forces in Europe performers at a banquet Friday at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, according to a USAFE news release.

Other award recipients included:

n Noncommissioned Officer of the Year — Tech. Sgt. Sachiko Jones, 501st Combat Support Wing, RAF Mildenhall, England.

n Senior NCO of the Year — Senior Master Sgt. Gerald Euler Jr., 48th Fighter Wing, RAF Lakenheath, England.

n First Sergeant of the Year — Senior Master Sgt. Robin McNatt, 435th Air Base Wing, Ramstein.

n Civilian of the Year Category I — Darren Penrose, 48th Fighter Wing, RAF Mildenhall.

n Civilian of the Year Category II — Donald Ehrman, 65th Air Base Wing, Lajes Field, Azores.

n Company Grade Officer of the Year (tie) — Capt. Jerry Ruiz from USAFE Headquarters, Ramstein, and Capt. Joe Wildman, RAF Mildenhall

n Winners were chosen from 77 nominees selected from bases across Europe. They will compete at the Air Force level later this year.

Retired Air Force Gen. John P. Jumper, Air Force chief of staff from 2001 to 2005 and former USAFE commander from 1997 to 2000, was the banquet’s guest speaker.
