Three Oregon National Guard members were still hospitalized as of Monday after the van taking them from a weekend training event was involved in a fatal four-vehicle crash.
Guard members accounted for 13 of the 17 people involved in the crash, several local media outlets reported.
The Oregon Military Department and Oregon State Police did not immediately respond Wednesday to questions seeking an updated status of those injured or additional information about the investigation.
The collision occurred just before 9 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Route 30 in Clatsop County, state police said in a news release Monday.
A westbound Ford Ranger that crossed into oncoming traffic sideswiped another pickup truck before hitting a passenger van carrying 11 National Guard members, according to the statement.
A fourth vehicle was unable to stop and struck both the passenger van and the Ford Ranger. The driver of the Ford, Markham Marshall Stangland, 65, of Warrenton, died at the scene.
Spc. Raiden Cunningham, 21, was driving fellow guard members back from Camp Rilea, a base on the northwest coast, when the crash occurred.
He was taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries, state police said. The drivers of the two other vehicles were transported to the local hospital with minor injuries, the statement said.
The highway, which runs along the Columbia River between Astoria and Portland, was closed for about four hours.
